Not many parents would let their kids wander around the real world
unsupervised and unprotected, and there's no reason to treat the
cyber-world any differently. While there's plenty out there to
educate and entertain them, our children should learn to avoid a
few neighborhoods.
Start by learning the basics of safe surfing. Larry's
World is a good place for Web-wary parents to start. A farther
of two, journalist Larry Magid lays out some sensible rules for
young surfers. Visit CyberAngels
to find guidelines for protecting kids from Internet crime.
Once you've got the basics, teach them to your child by playing
a round of KidsCom's Internet
Safety Game. The game comes formatted for both very young children
and those eight years and over. You can draw up a contract that
specifies where your kids can surf and what's off-limits. SafeSurf's
Internet lifeguard has an agreement you can use.
If you have doubts, software packages like CyberSitter
or NetNanny
can filter sites that post pornography, violence or other
adults-only content. Some blocking devices will even patrol email,
newsgroups, and chat sites for offensive material.
Remember also that Lighthouse Square does not include content
